Historic Vote by NH Senate Week of April 12
The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on HB 556 to repeal the death penalty next Tuesday, April 14th at 1:30 at the Legislative Office Building in rooms 201-203. Please take the following actions:
1. Plan to attend the hearing. Someone from NHCADP will be there with repeal buttons. Make sure you get one and wear it.
2. Testify at the hearing.
3. Contact the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee (especially if you are in their districts or know them personally) and ask them to support repeal. I have attached a list of the members at the end of this email.
4. Contact Senators Maggie Hassan or Sylvia Larsen if you are in their districts and ask them to support repeal of the death penalty, even in the face of the Governor's promised veto. They are the Senate Leaders. They should lead!
This is a great opportunity for the Abolitionists of NH. Please try to do as much as you possibly can.
For those of you who have not testified before, let me explain the process. It is painless and easy.
When you come in to the hearing room (Legislative Office Building Rms 201--203) there will be sign up sheets. You can put your name on a list supporting the bill. You do not need to offer testimony if you do that, and it records you as present and in favor of the bill.
If you wish to testify there will be a sheet that you fill in. It asks if you are testifying for or against the bill, if you represent any particular group, and how long you will need for your testimony.
That is all that it takes. Then you wait until your name is called.
A lot of people will testify and for greatest impact on the Senators, limiting your testimony to 3 - 5 minutes. Shorter but personal makes a huge impression.
It is amazing how democratic and user friendly the process is. I encourage everyone who can make it, even for a little while, to attend the hearing and at the very least sign in on the “support” list.
Representatives from NHCADP will be present handing out buttons. Please make sure that you get one. It helps to make a visual impact.
This is an exciting time for NH Abolitionists!
